Are Lip Fillers and Skin-Lightening Products Truly Safe?
In today’s beauty-driven world, cosmetic enhancements like lip fillers and skin-lightening treatments are increasingly popular. But how safe are they really?
Dr. Debraj Shome, senior cosmetic surgeon and director at The Esthetic Clinics, highlights that while lip fillers are generally safe, they can go wrong if not performed by a certified expert. “Improper techniques, overuse of fillers, or substandard products can cause allergic reactions, infections, or an unnatural, duck-like appearance,” he warns. Following post-procedure care instructions is crucial, as the lips are particularly sensitive after treatment.
Meanwhile, skin-lightening products, including glutathione injections, are under scrutiny for potential health risks. Dr. Raja Ramachandran, assistant professor at PGI Chandigarh, notes that while regulated products undergo thorough testing, unregulated creams can contain high mercury levels, damaging the kidneys and leading to conditions like Membranous Nephropathy (MN). Additionally, excessive glutathione can be toxic.
The key takeaway? Choose certified professionals, use only approved products, and always prioritize health over quick beauty fixes.
